What is Grapeseed Extract?
For thousands of years people have been enjoying grapes and utilizing them for food, drink, ans as a natural medicine for a variety of conditions. Grapeseed extract is a manufactured derivative of whole grapeseeds which provide a high concentration of flavonoids, linoleic acid, vitamin E, and lipids. Most of these compounds can also be found in the skin of the grape and can be obtained by eating grapes, drinking grape juice, or drinking moderate quantities of wine. However, grapeseed extract offers a higher concentration of the beneficial compounds.
Forms of Grapeseed Extract
Grapeseed extract is available in a variety of forms including liquid extracts, capsules, and tablets. Available doses are also varied but products should be standardized and have a concentration of proanthocyanidins of 40-80% and at least a 95% OPC content.
Grapeseed Extract Uses
Studies of the oligomeric proanthocyanidn complexes (OPCs) found in grapeseeds have shown they can be quite beneficial for patients suffering from a variety of ailments including cancer, heart disease, aging skin, edema, chronic venous insufficiency, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Grapeseed extract has anecdotal evidence which supports using it for even more medical conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and treating hemorrhoids.
